January, 1999

Okay... I have almost finished the premiere issue of Eye Caramba. I do still need to polish a couple of items and I am waiting for a friend to get some code together for my Random Generator but, finally, there is much more done than there is left to do. And thank you to everyone who has helped me along. At this point, I am pleased with the overall look I've got going. Though I have learned a lot, this maiden issue is pretty simple really so, I am going to be trying to push the boundaries a little further out in the next issue. As for the style of editing and introductions and layout I would be happy to get some feedback. Tell me what you think. Compliments are nice, criticism is welcome. For instance, there are some people who have enjoyed the introductions to the artist portfolios and there are some who have felt I am a little too offbeat for my own good and would prefer a straight presentation. So, it seems that pleasing everybody is out of the question. Hmmm... I will admit that I put my words to the portfolios a little reluctantly and had first encouraged each artist to provide me with personal writing, artist's statement, short stories, whatever, because I would like for the artist to have the strongest voice here. My task, as I see it, is to put things together in an articulate manner visually and conceptually.

Now, I am going to slow down for a little while, make a revision here and there, change the images on the contents page so that artists and writers get a more equal opportunity for exposure, do a little promotion work for Eye Caramba. Then it will soon be time to get my own site in order and start pulling together work for the next issue, due April 1999.

I need to make pictures also.

Ask not what Eye Caramba can do for you...

Tell your friends. Talk a fine writer or photographer into sending me some work. Give me a really good idea. There will definitely be room for new areas. One such idea is an announcements section for exhibition and publishing opportunities. I think I could manage this idea without stressing too badly. Any other things that this magazine is sorely lacking? I would like to know. The main shift you will see in the future will be a little more balance between the artists' work and the writers' work. It has been a treat to read the stories and poetry and letters that have been submitted and, in the future, I am going to include as much good writing as I can.

I'm hungry. That's all for now,

Gordon Stettinius
